RETURN TO HOME press release:

Evanston Art Center On Tour, a program which brings exhibitions of faculty and student work to off-site locations throughout the community, presents Return to Home, new photographic work by EAC faculty member Andrew Breen at the 800 Elgin building in downtown Evanston. Return to Home is a series of reconfigured and reimagined domestic spaces from classic television sitcoms and dramas. The exhibition opens Tuesday, August 26th, and continues through September 31st.


Breen uses screenshots salvaged from shows as diverse as "The Honeymooners," "Charles in Charge," and "Dynasty" to create photomontages that look beyond the intended rigid, time-based TV narrative; Return to Home places the constructed and sublimated spaces of production sets in focus, renewing the potential of stagnant imagined places.


Andrew Breen received a BFA in photography with a minor in Art History from Columbia College Chicago. He was awarded the Weisman Memorial Scholarship twice and was a finalist in the Union League Civic and Arts Foundation’s Visual Arts Competition. His work has been shown at the various galleries including Hokin Gallery, Ben Shahn Gallery, and Pierro Gallery. He lives and works in Chicago, IL and currently teaches at the Evanston Art Center.

Pierre Huyghe's "One Million Kingdoms"

"In Pierre Huyghe's "One Million Kingdoms", a voice maps out unexplored lunar terrain. The voice belongs to a Japanese Manga character named AnnLee, for which Huyghe, along with artists Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Philippe Parreno, purchased the copyright in 1999. Featured in previous works by the three artists, here this brooding young girl speaks in a voice that is an electronically altered version of the astronaut Neil Armstrong's communiqués from the first moon landing; the text she recites conflates Armstrong's historic utterances with excerpts from Jules Verne's 1895 novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. Armstrong's words prompt AnnLee as she moves from place to place on a constantly fluctuating landscape, in which mountains, craters, ridges, and outcroppings rise and fall according to the sound waves of his (her) voice."

Chicago's NEXT Fair

I have a pulse. My eyes, brain, social functions have recovered from last weekend's Artropolis; I spent most of my time on the NEXT floor with my partner Nick, who wrote some blogs for the Cue Foundation. I heard many were disappointed, overwhelmed -- but the key is to: 1) take several breaks 2) drink 3) spread out your visit by going back a second day.
